Compression

Why do the breasts have to be compressed?
Compression is needed to obtain a clear image of your breast tissue while using the least amount of radiation. If the breast is not compressed enough, the image will appear blurred. This will make it difficult for the radiologist to read the x-ray and detect any changes. Compression only lasts for a few of seconds during each x-ray.

Can the compression cause breast cancer to spread?
No. Compression is safe and will not harm your breasts or cause any existing cancer to spread.
