What Happens During a Mammogram

About the Program

The Screening Mammography Program (SMP) began in 1988 through the BC Cancer Agency. Its goal is to reduce deaths from breast cancer through early detection. From time to time the Agency reviews the screening policy to ensure we are up-to-date with current evidence-based research findings. The screening policy is currently under review.

How the Program Works

  • Regular screening mammograms (breast x-rays) are available to B.C. women ages 40-79 who have no new breast problems.
  • Results are mailed to you and your health care provider.
  • Once in the program, you will receive mailed reminders when it is time for your next exam. Overview of Breast Screening Journey.
  • You can go to any SMP centre and your previous SMP mammogram is available for the radiologist for comparison.
  • About 10 per cent of women may need further tests. For more information see: About the Test
  • Program follows the standards set by the Canadian Association of Radiologists - Mammography Accreditation Program (CAR-MAP).
