Canadian Task Force...release breast screening guideline
The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care has released an updated guideline for breast cancer screening. The new guideline, which weighs the potential harms and benefits of breast cancer screening in average risk women ages 40-74, updates previous guidelines by the Task Force from 1994 and 2001. The recommendations can be found under Current Recommendations . A decision-aid and FAQ for Patients for this guideline can be found under Patient Resources .

Currently, the BC Cancer Agency's (BCCA) screening policy remains unchanged, as follows:

  • Healthy (asymptomatic) women ages 40-79 can book appointments directly without a doctor's referral.
  • Women younger than 40 or older than 79 who may be at higher risk for breast cancer can also be screened with a doctor's or primary health care provider's referral.
  •  Any woman who discovers a breast abnormality should
talk to her primary health care provider, who may provide a referral for diagnostic tests.

Please note: Before the Task Force began its review, BCCA began a review of its screening policy, which is still ongoing. BCCA's will consider this national guideline in our policy review process.
